(9-1066) BEAUTIFULLY ENGRAVED ANTIQUE COLT SINGLE ACTION
This revolver was a U.S. Artillery with 10,XXX frame serial number. The barrel and cylinder have been relined to .22 Caliber RF. We believe this work was done by Enewold as the barrel is stamped R.F. Enewold. The engraving bears all the hallmarks of Wilbur Glahn (including his trademark triangle motif on the recoil shield), intertwined arabesque foliate scrollwork is full coverage. Very fine punch dot background, virtually all of an old silver plate finish is intact and is turning a darkish patina, name on backstrap is ‘Fay A. Brown’. Beautiful Colt Medallion ivory grips have aged as well and fit great; front sight modified, shiny bore. e

This is the lowest numbered Colt with this feature I’ve ever encountered. Overall revolver is in extraordinary condition retaining 30%+ shiny bbl, triggerguard and backstrap blue, 75% shiny housing blue, the balance turned a dark blue plum coloration, cylinder is an even dark blue plum as well, excellent traces of case colors are visible on the hammer and backstrap-balance darkened. Excellent one piece walnut with nearly all orig varnish, doughnut ejector rod head and correct type II housing. All original. e

7-1/2” barrel, excellent bore and excellent overall. 97% original bright shiny barrel blue, 90%+ shiny housing blue, the balance starting to turn, almost all blue present in cylinder flutes, the balance of the cylinder is a plum blue patina coloration, vivid case colors are visible on most of the frame and hammer; 90% blue on triggerguard and backstrap. Serial number 133,512 on all parts except the backstrap which is 115,916-this number is listed in ‘A Continuing Study’ on page 79. The butt of this backstrap also bears the large marking ‘C138’. VG solid one piece walnut grips have been sanded but the number ‘47’ is visible near the frame on left side (note the ‘47’ number in ‘A Continuing Study’, page 134). This revolver has it’s orig finish and was not refurbished but left in its as-new condition at the time. A very rare find! e

Accompanying this piece is Lou Gehrig’s original application for a New York State pistol permit on which one of the character witnesses is Ed Barrow, owner of the New York Yankees as well as some other well known dignitaries. Many documents come with this piece including a movie poster featuring Lou Gehrig in his only motion picture, ‘Rawhide’. The gun was originally used in the movie and given to Gehrig as a souvenir. Orig cond is exc with nearly all the orig bright blue and vivid case hardening. 5-1/2”, carved mother-of-pearl grips featuring a Mexican Eagle with a snake motif. Well documented, excellent piece of Americana. e
